Creating a conscience
I had my first "my child just said the most beautiful thing" experience tonight, except mine involved some sign language too. Micah, Liam and I ventured to Babies R Us for a couple of things and when we were leaving, Micah spotted a piece of trash in the parking lot. He pointed at it and said, "Uh oh that." He kept pointing at it, and I told him it was garbage and that someone had dropped it. As I was putting him in his seat, I asked him if we should ask the garbage collectors to come and pick it up and he signed "yes" immediately.
It may not seem beautiful, but consider this: to this point, all I've known is that Micah loves garbage trucks. I didn't know that he really understood what they did. Now I know that he not only knows what a garbage truck does, but that it's wrong to put your trash on the ground - that it doesn't belong there. Other than the fact that we don't litter, I'm not sure how he came to that understanding at such a young age. However it happened, I'm proud of him and grateful that he already seems to have a sense, no matter how limited it is, that it's important to take care of our planet.
Now if I could only get over my own guilt about not picking up the trash and modeling that for him...

I took the trash out last night. I hope this counts.
