I read about an art competition held for kids at our local Center Place for the Arts. It's summer - why not arm the boys with paints, brushes, and blank canvases, and let them see what they can come up with? Voila! They were part of their first art competition!
The show was called, "Little Monsters Create", but they could do their art around any theme that they wanted.
Our Disney-crazed children chose, well, Disney-themed subjects. Here they are on the ages 4-6 wall of art. They're the two on the left.
This is what Micah created, and the picture below it is the artist statement card that we also had to submit.
Here's Liam's painting and artist statement.
The artists with their creations!
Another wall of art from the show.
Of course, the best part of any art competition (or sporting event or chorus concert...) is the snack table, so we hit that up.
Getting their awards for participating!
When your last name is "Black" and they announced the awards in alphabetical order, it's a long time to wait on stage.
The whole group! There were only five or six boys that participated, which made us extra proud of guys for doing this. It's really important to expose them to all different kinds of experiences, and they had a lot of fun painting their creations. The woman next to me kept complaining that all of the winners were students at Center Place, but for the first time in my ultra-competitive-natured life, I didn't agree with her. I really didn't care about whether they won any prize or not. I'm just proud that they were up there, and contributing, and creating.
They're proud of themselves - and we're proud of them!!
Way to go, boys!!!
